Overview

Doubles Hip is the jet motion hub of Pistol. Instead of the standard 2x2 spread of a base Doubles look, the TE aligns off the ball at the hip of the tackle, which gives you a movable chess piece that can wing out, motion across the formation, or stay attached as an extra gap blocker in the run game. The RB sits behind the QB at pistol depth, so your run reads (Read Option, HB Zone Wk, Mtn Pin Pull Sweep) keep both A gaps live while the passing game still gets a downhill launch point rather than a deep dropback.

The 11 personnel grouping is what makes the set dangerous in a competitive lobby. You get a slot receiver working against whoever the defense leaves inside, and with the SLWR tag this set is built to isolate your best route runner on a nickel corner or a middle linebacker in man. Every jet play (Fk Jet Divide, Zone Fake Jet, Jet Touch Pass, Jet PA Cross, Jet PA Cross HB Leak) forces the defense to declare motion rules pre snap, and Madden defensive AI will often flip a zone strength or trigger a man defender to travel, which tells you exactly what coverage you are attacking before the snap.

Where this set separates itself is the RPO and play action package. RPO Alert Jet Slant and RPO Jet Alert Slant let you read the box count and either hand off or throw the alert slant into vacated space, while Mtn PA Boot and Mtn PA Boot Fork move the pocket away from pressure and give you high low reads on the boot side. Mesh Rail and Z Shake Crosser round out the dropback menu with a legitimate man beater and a rub concept, and Mtn HB Slip Screen punishes anyone who starts sending heat at your pistol backfield. The 3DRB and Power HB tags mean you can run the same formation with a receiving back on third down or a bruiser on short yardage without changing the look.

Strengths

  • Mesh Rail is a premier man beater out of this set: the crossing rub clears inside defenders and the rail route up the seam kills any linebacker matched on the back, and you can hot route the outside receiver to a fade to widen the safety.
  • Jet motion plays force pre snap coverage declarations, so watching whether a defender travels with the motion man instantly separates man from zone before you commit to a read.
  • The RPO alert slants punish light boxes and heavy blitz looks at the same time: if the defense loads up you throw the slant into the vacated hook window, if they play soft you hand it off with numbers.
  • Mtn PA Boot and Mtn PA Boot Fork move the QB off the spot, which beats interior nano blitzes and gives you a flat, deep out, and crosser triangle against Cover 3 and Cover 4 drop.
  • The off ball TE at the hip can be motioned or hot routed into a flat, seam, or block assignment, giving you three different formation strengths from one presnap look without burning a timeout.

Weaknesses

  • Only one true tight end and one back means edge pressure and A gap blitzes can outnumber your protection, especially on the deeper dropback plays like Z Shake Crosser and PA Post Swirl.
  • Play action boots and jet fakes hold your QB in the pocket longer, so a user controlled edge rusher or a well timed overload blitz gets home before the routes develop.
  • Jet motion plays are easy to scout in a series: repeat them and opponents will start crashing the motion side, jumping the alert slant, or shading coverage to the receiver in motion.
  • Pistol depth removes the deep dropback cushion, meaning immediate interior penetration collapses the run game before your reads develop on Read Option and HB Zone Wk.
  • Against tight man with a user in the middle of the field, the mesh and crosser concepts get squeezed and you are left throwing into contested traffic with no true vertical clear out unless you hot route one.

Usage Tips

Open with Zone Fake Jet or Fk Jet Divide early to establish the motion, then come back to Jet PA Cross HB Leak once the defense starts flowing with the jet.

On third and medium, bring in your 3DRB tagged back and run Mesh Rail: the rail up the seam is the answer against man free, the shallow crosser is the answer against zone.

If you see a two high shell with light box numbers, stay in RPO Alert Jet Slant and let the read make the decision instead of guessing pre snap.

When opponents start bringing interior heat, call Mtn HB Slip Screen or Mtn PA Boot to get outside the rush lane rather than sitting in the pocket on dropback concepts.

Hot route the hip TE to a flat or seam to give yourself a quick answer against blitz, and motion the slot receiver to identify man coverage before deciding to throw the isolation route.
