Mtn Pin Pull Sweep is a pin and pull outside zone sweep run out of Pistol Doubles Hip with 11 personnel. The diagram shows the offensive line pinning down on the play side and the backside linemen pulling around the edge to lead block, while the HB takes a lateral path toward the sweep hole with a lead blocker in front clearing the alley. This is a pure run play designed to attack the edge with numbers, and the primary read progression starts with the pulling lead blocker's kick out or seal, then bounces outside if the edge is sealed or cuts up inside the pulling guard's block if the defensive end squeezes hard.
Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing down hard, since that opens the cutback lane behind the pulling linemen. Identify overset fronts where the defensive line shifts toward the play side, this alerts you to a jump on the pulling guards before they reach the point of attack. Look for slow flowing linebackers, if they read run late the sweep will get outside before they can fill the alley. Contain defenders who stay disciplined on the edge and squeeze the pullers can blow this play up, so avoid this call against teams that key on pin and pull with edge set defensive ends. User controlled defenders spying the backfield or crashing the pulling lineman's gap immediately can diagnose the sweep, so mix in play action from this same formation to slow their trigger.
Check the defensive front pre-snap and look for light boxes or safeties rotated away from the play side edge before calling this up.
Use motion if available to identify man coverage rotation or force the defense to declare its edge support before the snap.
Hot route the TE into a stalk or seal block if the edge defender is walked up tight to the line to prevent immediate penetration.
Best called on run downs like first and ten or short yardage second down when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts.
Pair this with Mtn PA Boot or Mtn PA Boot Fork off the same look to keep defenses honest, since the play action boot mirrors this sweep action and punishes overaggressive edge defenders.
