Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Pistol Doubles Hip that opens with jet motion across the backfield to freeze linebackers before the QB fakes a zone handoff. Off that fake, the line executes zone run blocking to sell the run action while the single receiver to the boot side runs a shallow drag/flat route that stretches horizontally behind the line. The primary read is the flat/drag route created by the play-action fake: with linebackers sucked up by the run and jet fakes, the QB looks to hit the receiver in the open space underneath as he crosses the field.
Key the linebacker flow at the snap, if they bite hard on the zone run fake and jet motion, the flat/drag route will be wide open in the vacated underneath zone. Watch safety rotation before the snap, a single high safety shell means the defense is selling run support and susceptible to the play-action boot. Identify if the defense is running a man-match scheme, since aggressive man defenders chasing the jet motion can be exploited by the crossing route sitting in the space they vacate. Look for a spy or lurk defender sitting flat-footed in the shallow zone, a disciplined defense that stays home on the drag route will take away the primary read and force a checkdown or scramble. Blitz-heavy defenses that send extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the boot timing, so track edge pressure numbers pre-snap to gauge protection risk.
Run this from run-heavy personnel and early down-and-distance (1st and 10, 2nd and short) so the jet motion and zone fake actually hold linebackers and safeties. Check the box count and safety depth pre-snap, if you see two safeties sitting deep and linebackers flowing hard to the fake motion, this is a green light. Hot route the backside receiver into a deeper crossing or comeback route against teams that key run fakes and jump the flat immediately. Pair this with Fk Jet Divide and HB Zone Wk earlier in a drive so the defense over-commits to the zone run look, then hit this play-action shot when linebackers start crashing downhill on run fakes. Use pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone, if the defender follows the jet motion man to man, expect a natural pick opportunity for the drag route underneath.
