Bunch

Overview

Pistol Bunch takes the standard Pistol depth advantage (QB four yards back, HB stacked directly behind) and pairs it with a tight three receiver cluster to the strong side, leaving a single receiver isolated on the backside. Unlike the spread out Pistol sets that put two receivers on each side and force the defense to declare coverage early, Bunch compresses the read for the defense while giving you a clean iso matchup on the lone split end. Personnel is 11 (1 RB 1 TE), so you keep gap scheme runs like HB Counter and Dbl Mtn Duo Wrap live while still fielding three legitimate route runners in the cluster.

Strengths

  • The bunch cluster creates natural traffic against man coverage, and Corner Strike, TE Angle, and Flanker Drive all use that congestion to rub defenders off and generate instant separation without needing a single hot route.
  • Spacing and Slant Spacing are premium zone beaters, flooding the short and intermediate levels with three quick options that punish Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells sitting deep.
  • The Pistol alignment disguises run direction, so Inside Zone Split, HB Slam, and HB Counter all look identical out of the same backfield picture until the mesh point.
  • Heavy play action inventory (Dbl Mtn PA Stretch, PA Boot Slide, PA Pin Deep, PA Deep In) sells the same run keys you have been showing all game, and PA Boot Slide gets your QB outside the initial rush lane against interior pressure.
  • Read Option Wk gives you a legitimate RPO style answer, and the isolated backside receiver means you can hot route him to a fade or slant to punish single high looks with no help.

Weaknesses

  • The compressed cluster gives the defense a numbers advantage to the strong side, so overload blitzes and nano pressure from the bunch side arrive before the rub concepts have time to work.
  • Pistol depth means the QB is not deep enough to reset against edge heat, and PA Boot Slide can get run down from behind if the backside end is left unblocked and user controlled.
  • Cover 2 and press bail looks squeeze the short spacing concepts, and a user defender sitting in the flat can jump Curl Flat and HB Slip Screen for a quick tackle for loss.
  • Only one receiver on the weak side, so if the defense drops a safety onto the bunch and plays single high, the isolated route becomes your only downfield answer.
  • Run inventory is heavy but the HB is aligned directly behind the QB with no offset, which limits your ability to bounce outside quickly against edge setting defenses.

Usage Tips

Use Spacing and Slant Spacing on third and medium when you read a deep zone shell, then flip to Corner Strike or TE Angle once the defense starts pressing the cluster.

Motion the outside bunch receiver across the formation pre snap to identify man versus zone, then check into HB Slip Screen or Read Option Wk if the defense chases.

Establish HB Slam and Inside Zone Split early so Dbl Mtn PA Stretch and PA Pin Deep hold the linebackers, which is where the real explosive plays live.

On second and short, run HB Dive or HB Draw out of the same look you used for Spacing to keep the front honest and set up PA Deep In later in the drive.

Hot route the isolated backside receiver to a fade against single high man and user the safety read pre snap, since no help means a jump ball with your best matchup.
