Breakdown

PA Pin Deep runs a play-action fake out of the Pistol Bunch alignment to freeze the front seven before working a deep progression. From the bunch, one receiver clears out on a deep corner/go route up the numbers while an inside receiver runs a deep crosser that stretches from the bunch side all the way across the field. The backside isolated receiver runs an out and up, and the fullback or attached blocker checks down on a shallow drag underneath as the last resort. This is a man beater designed to hit big plays over the top, with the primary read starting on the deep corner route and progressing to the deep crosser if the corner route is covered.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety in the middle of the field signals man coverage underneath and opens up the deep corner route against a trailing defender. Two deep safeties in a shell usually means the deep crosser will have to split the difference between the two safeties, so timing the throw before the safety can rotate over is critical. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the play fake it confirms man or zone with a run key bite, giving both the corner and crosser room to work behind them. Beware of a user controlled safety sitting deep in the middle of the field lurking for the deep crosser, since that route crosses the entire width of the field and is vulnerable to a jump route read. Against zone blitz looks with five or six rushers, get the ball out on the corner route quickly since the deep crosser takes too long to develop against pressure.

Usage Tips

Sell the play fake by holding the ball fully into the run action animation before hitting the throw button to keep linebackers and safeties frozen for an extra beat. Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses are more likely to bite on the run fake and sit in single high or man coverage. Check the deep corner route first against man coverage since it has a natural rub off the bunch alignment, then work to the deep crosser if you see a deep half safety sitting on the corner. Pair this call with Mtn PA Slide or PA Boot Slide in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect multiple play-action shots off similar formation looks. If the corner has outside leverage pre-snap, hot route the backside out and up into a simple corner or fade to give yourself a quicker one-on-one shot.
