PA Boot Slide is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Bunch that pulls the QB to the right on a boot fake off the run action. From the bunch alignment, one receiver runs a deep corner route to clear out the sideline, the slot man runs a slide route underneath heading back toward the boundary, and a third receiver releases outside on a shallow drag away from the rollout. The backside receiver runs a deep comeback that breaks back toward the sideline as a window against zone. This is a play-action man and zone beater that relies on the QB rolling with the pocket. The primary read progression starts with the underneath slide route as the QB rolls, then works up to the corner route if the flat defender bites, with the backside comeback as a late alert if the play breaks down.
Defensive Reads
Check for two deep safeties pre-snap, a two high shell tells you the corner route has less help over the top and becomes the higher value throw Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sits on the slide route the offense should climb to the corner, if he bails deep the slide is wide open Look for a hard edge blitz or contain defender crashing the rollout side, this play struggles against pressure that beats the boot action before routes develop User controlled defenders lurking in the shallow drag lane can jump the underneath route, so track any manual spy or rat defender shading toward the rollout Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the drag route is a green light situation, the play design is built to create natural rub leverage out of the bunch alignment against man
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs or second and short to sell the run fake convincingly off Inside Zone Split or HB Dive out of the same Bunch personnel
Check the flat and curl zone defenders pre-snap, if you see a defender sitting hard in the flat, the slide route will be a low percentage throw so lean on the corner route instead
Roll the QB fully with the play design and do not stop the rollout early, the boot action needs the extra time to let the corner route develop behind the slide
Use hot routes to convert the shallow drag into a quick option route if you are facing man coverage with tight press at the line
Pair this play with HB Slam or HB Counter earlier in a series to get linebackers flowing hard downhill, then hit this boot action once they overcommit to the run fake
