HB Counter out of Pistol Bunch is a power run play that pulls linemen across the formation to seal the counter lane for the HB. The bunch alignment to one side stacks blockers tight to the ball, creating natural traffic for the counter action while the Pistol alignment keeps the RB in a downhill position for a direct handoff read. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the HB's job to press the counter path, read the pulling guard's block on the edge defender, and cut off the block into the alley created by the misdirection.

Defensive Reads

Check the linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow and square they are more likely to read the counter action quickly and fill the cutback lane. Look for safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap out of the bunch look, which signals run support and a potential nano blitz timed to the mesh point. Watch for the play side defensive end squeezing hard down the line, which can blow up the counter before the puller arrives. Man coverage looks with the corner pressed on the bunch receivers often mean the defense is not selling out against the run, giving the counter more room to develop. Heavy blitz packages with both linebackers crashing the same gap can beat this play, so be ready to bail into a cutback if the backside cornerback abandons the edge.

Usage Tips

Run this play when the defense shows a light box, especially against 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with fewer than six defenders inside the tackles. Use pre-snap motion or shifts sparingly since the bunch alignment already disguises run action against aggressive defenses that key on formation strength. Pair HB Counter with HB Dive and Wide Zone from the same set so defenders cannot sit on the counter timing once they see the bunch look. Attack second and short or first and ten situations where defenders are more likely to bite on the initial flow before the counter hits. Use the pulling guard as your user key and manually pick up the first unblocked defender if the AI blocker misses the assignment.
