Breakdown

HB Duo out of Pistol Bunch is a gap scheme run play built to create double team movement at the point of attack and let the running back press the hole before bouncing off the double team. The offensive line uses combo blocks up front to seal defensive linemen at the line of scrimmage while the fullback or extra blocker (in 11 personnel, this comes from the TE or bunch receiver working down) climbs to the second level to clear a linebacker. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is press the double team, locate the first daylight cutback lane, then decide between the A gap or bouncing outside based on linebacker flow.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth before the snap. Linebackers sitting shallow at four yards or less are cheating the run fit and will trigger fast, so plan your cutback lane accordingly. Identify the safety alignment. Two high safeties with a light box favors Duo since it forces one safety to fill late, while a single high safety with eight in the box shuts this run down quickly. Post snap, key the playside linebacker's first step. If he steps up into the double team immediately, look for the cutback since the second level will be softer on the backside. Watch for user linebackers spying the mesh point or crashing the A gap on a delayed blitz timing, since this is the primary counter defenses use to blow up Duo before the double team seals. Nano blitz packages and heavy inside blitzes from 46 or Bear fronts beat this play consistently since they collapse the double team before it can climb, so recognize stacked fronts pre-snap and be ready to check out.

Usage Tips

Run this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short when you want to establish tempo and set up boundary reads later in the drive.

Check the box count before the snap. If the defense has six or more defenders in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter run or checking to a quick pass instead of forcing Duo into a stacked front.

Use the left or right stick to manually guide your running back through the mesh point, since Duo rewards patience over pure speed to the hole.

Pair this play with Mesh or Slant Spacing from the same Bunch Pistol set so the defense has to respect both the inside run and the quick game out of an identical formation look, which slows down linebacker crash tendencies.

Against aggressive slanting fronts, hot route the fullback or TE to a chip block or adjust the playside guard's assignment if you are seeing consistent penetration before the double team can develop.
