Defensive Reads

Man coverage on the bunch receivers with press corners is a green light, since those defenders will turn their backs to the run trying to stay with the vertical stems. Zone shells with linebackers reading run first and staying square will squeeze the draw lanes and limit the explosive gain. Check safety depth pre-snap, since a single high safety cheating down into the box signals the defense expects run and this play loses its deception value. Post-snap, key on defensive tackles, if they get up the field on the snap chasing the quarterback drop instead of holding their gaps, the interior lane for the HB will open quickly.

Call this on early downs or in 2nd and medium situations when the defense shows a heavy pass-rush look or overload blitz pre-snap. Identify blitz packages before the snap by checking linebacker depth and edge alignment, since HB Draw thrives when defenders are crashing upfield instead of reading run fits. Do not hot route the bunch receivers unless you need a quick outlet against a suspected all-out blitz, since the vertical stems are what sell the pass fake and hold the second level. Pair this play with Dbl Mtn PA Stretch or PA Boot Slide earlier in a series so the defense starts respecting the play-action look and commits to pass rush lanes, making the draw hit even harder later. Use manual control on the HB after the handoff to make one cut off the natural flow of the linebackers rather than forcing the play into a predetermined gap.
