Flanker Drive is a five man route concept out of the Bunch Pistol formation featuring a two level crossing combo on the strong side. From the bunch alignment, the outermost receiver runs a deep drive route crossing underneath the corner route from the opposite side, while the middle bunch receiver clears out on a deep in from the far side and the inside bunch receiver runs a shallow drag underneath. The bottom receiver in the backfield area works a short angle route to the flat, giving the quarterback a layered progression from the drag to the drive to the corner. This is a Cover 4 beater built to attack the seams and underneath zone voids that quarters coverage creates, with the primary read starting on the drive route crossing the field before working outside to the corner.
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing a two high shell since Cover 4 and Cover 2 defenders will struggle to cover the drive route crossing behind the linebackers. Post-snap, key the flat defender on the corner route side, if he sinks too deep into his zone drop the corner route will be wide open on the sideline. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the shallow drag lane, a smart human defender will jump the drag route to bait a turnover so double check the drive route is clearing before you check down. Against man coverage, this concept struggles if the defense brings a nano blitz or overloads the bunch with press corners, since the tight route spacing can create natural picks that officials may not always call in your favor. If linebackers show blitz depth or walk up pre-snap, get the ball out quickly on the flat angle route since the drive and corner routes take longer to develop and the quarterback will be exposed to interior pressure.
Look for two high safeties splitting the field pre-snap since this concept is specifically labeled a Cover 4 beater and thrives against quarters shells.
Start your read on the drive route working across the middle since it settles into the void behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties in Cover 4.
If the corner route wins outside against a hard flat defender or a blitzing corner, hit it immediately for a big chunk play down the sideline.
Use the shallow drag as your check down against pressure looks, especially on early down and distance when you want a safe completion to stay on schedule.
Pair this play with Mesh or Dash WR Leak from the same set to keep the defense guessing between horizontal crossing concepts and vertical shot plays out of the same bunch look.
