Breakdown

Dbl Mtn PA Stretch is a play-action pass off outside zone stretch fakes from Pistol Bunch 11 personnel. Both bunch receivers run vertical mountain routes stacked up the field, one from the slot climbing to the deep corner and one bending outside to the sideline, while the isolated X receiver runs a shallow drag across the formation and the running back releases into the flat off the play fake. The primary read progression starts with the two mountain routes to attack a single deep defender or safety on vertical stress, then works down to the drag and flat as the underneath check downs against zone or blitz pressure. This is a man beater on the vertical stack that also functions as a zone beater versus single high shells due to the two go routes clearing out one deep defender.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety struggles to cover both mountain routes and usually has to pick one, leaving the other open on the vertical stack. Watch the flat defender and linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake the flat route to the running back and the drag underneath both come open immediately. Cover 3 with a hard flat corner squeezes the drag but leaves the deep corner route open against the rotating safety, take the shot outside. Man coverage with an overhang linebacker on the running back is vulnerable to the flat route since linebackers rarely carry backs into the boundary in man beater situations. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties shut this down hardest since both mountain routes run into help, expect the drag and flat checkdowns to be your best options in that shell.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since the double mountain concept overloads one deep defender and creates a natural window for the outside vertical route.

Use the play fake to freeze linebackers on early down and medium distance, ideally first or second down inside your own territory or at midfield where defenses respect the outside zone run.

If the corner playing the outside mountain route sits in soft zone, hot route him to a comeback or use the drag as the immediate answer against off coverage.

Motion the bunch receiver before the snap to confirm man coverage, if the defender follows across the formation you have a green light to trust the mountain routes against man.

Pair this with Dbl Mtn HB Stretch and Dbl Mtn Duo Wrap in your play calling sequence, run the actual stretch runs first to sell the zone action and set up this play action shot later in the series.
