Breakdown

Inside Zone Split lines up out of Pistol Bunch with 11 personnel, giving the offensive line a zone blocking scheme that flows laterally before the running back picks his crease. The bunch alignment on the play side pulls defenders toward the trips look, creating natural displacement for the interior gaps on the backside cutback lane. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO look, so the primary read is the frontside double team at the point of attack, then bounce to the backside cutback if the play side gap gets clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow and square to the line they are likely reading run fits and will flow hard to the play side. Identify whether the defense is running a 4-3 or 3-4 front, since a one gap penetrating front can blow up inside zone before the double team forms. Check safety alignment, if both safeties are deep in a two high shell the box should be lighter and the cutback lane opens up more easily. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he attacks downhill immediately without reading the double team he is vulnerable to the backside cutback. This play struggles against aggressive gap shooting blitzes and stacked fronts with extra defenders in the box, but it beats light boxes and defenses that over commit to stopping outside runs.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion out of the bunch look to identify if the defense is playing zone or man match, since inside zone hits differently against a shifting front. If the linebackers crash hard toward the bunch side, hot route the fullback or use the cutback lane on the backside for an explosive gain. This play works best on early downs (first and second) when you want to keep the defense honest and set up play-action shots later in the drive. Pair Inside Zone Split with Mtn Wide Zone or HB Duo from the same set so the defense cannot key on one blocking scheme, then hit them with Dbl Mtn PA Stretch or PA Boot Slide once they start crashing downhill. Against stacked boxes with eight or more defenders in the box, consider checking to a pass play instead since the zone blocking scheme will struggle to generate movement.
