Breakdown

HB Counter out of Pistol Y Trips is a power run play built off counter action, pulling the backside guard and tackle around to lead through the hole while the offensive line down blocks to create a natural cutback lane. The RB takes a counter step away from the play call before pressing back downhill behind the pullers, using misdirection to freeze linebackers flowing to the initial motion. This is a pure run play with no route combos, and the primary read progression is patience: let the pullers get in front, identify the first crease off the double team, and decide between the designed hole or a cutback based on how the defensive front flows.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and shade since stacked or crashing linebackers get gashed hard by the delayed counter action. Watch for a user-controlled defender flowing hard with the initial counter step, since disciplined defenders who stay home in their gap can blow up the pulling linemen before they reach the hole. Look for defensive ends or edge players squeezing down too quickly, which opens the bounce lane outside the counter's designed path. Against odd fronts or gap-exchange blitzes, the counter can get picked off completely if a linebacker reads the pull key and shoots the vacated gap immediately after the snap. Cover 1 or Cover 3 run support with fast-flowing safeties can close cutback lanes quickly, so identify if the safety is triggering downhill on run action before deciding to commit.

Usage Tips

Run this behind a lead blocker with good pull speed since the counter blocking scheme depends on the guard and tackle winning their reach blocks before the RB commits to a gap.

Use HB Counter on early downs against defenses stacking the box in run-fit alignments, since the misdirection specifically punishes linebackers keying the mesh point too fast.

Pair this with HB Slam or HB Dive earlier in a drive so the defense starts overplaying dive action, then hit them with the counter for an explosive cutback lane.

If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap with linebackers crashing downhill, consider audibling to PA Ctr Waggle or WR Screen since a stacked box can blow up the pulling linemen before they get outside.

Set up HB Counter after running Read Option or Pin Pull Sweep so the front seven has to respect multiple gap schemes off similar formation motion, widening your run lane options as the game progresses.
