Breakdown

HB Dive out of Pistol Y Trips is a straight downhill run play that sends the HB directly through the A gap behind the center's block, with the offensive line firing off the ball for a quick double team and combo blocks up front to seal the interior. The three trips receivers and the isolated receiver run off their defenders vertically, occupying corners and safeties to prevent extra run support from crashing down. This is a pure run play built for quick, decisive north-south yardage rather than a man or zone beater through the air, and the primary read is the HB hitting the initial crease off the center's hip before bouncing outside if the A gap is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth, if both linebackers are stacked tight to the line at five yards or closer this play will struggle to find a crease. Watch for a Mike linebacker cheating toward the trips side, since that opens up a bigger running lane on the backside A gap. Nano blitz packages and interior blitzes from the 3-4 or 46 fronts can blow this play up before the back reaches the line, so user-controlled defenders sitting in the A and B gaps are the biggest threat. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with safeties staying deep tend to give up more yardage since they keep fewer bodies near the box. If the defense shows man coverage with press corners on the trips side, expect the extra defender to stay home in the box rather than blitz, which makes this a tougher call against man fronts.

Usage Tips

Use HB Dive on short yardage and third and one situations where you need a quick, low risk gain to move the chains. Check the box count before the snap, if the defense shows six or fewer in the box this play hits fast because the trips formation pulls extra defenders out wide. Pair this with HB Slam and Strong Power in your play-calling sequence to condition the defense to respect inside runs, then punish overaggressive linebackers with Read Option or PA Ctr Waggle off the same look. Avoid calling this against stacked eight man fronts since there is no lead blocker to handle extra defenders in the box. Snap the ball quickly after the play call to prevent the defense from diagnosing run and shifting personnel.
