PA Comebacks out of Pistol Y Trips is a play-action shot play built around comeback routes on the boundary and trips side, with a deep crosser breaking the opposite way to hold the safety. The lone receiver on the backside runs a comeback to the sideline while the trips side stacks a comeback and a corner breaking route underneath a deep dig that clears across the field, and the play action fake sells the run to slow the linebackers before they can jump the shorter routes. This is a zone beater designed to attack cushions from Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells, with the primary read starting on the backside comeback, moving to the trips comeback, and finishing with the deep crosser if the safety bites on the play fake.
Defensive Reads
Diagnose the shell before the snap. Two safeties deep with corners playing off suggests zone coverage that the comebacks are designed to exploit at the breakpoint. Watch linebacker depth after the snap. If they step up hard on the play action fake, that confirms zone or man with no eyes on the pass, which opens the comeback windows underneath. Key the deep safety rotation on the play fake. A single high safety who steps toward the line of scrimmage is the sign to work the deep crosser late in the progression. Beat man coverage by attacking the comeback breakpoint with timing, since press man corners who bail deep get exposed on the sudden direction change back to the quarterback. Shut this play down by staying disciplined with linebackers in zone drops and not biting on the run fake, since sound zone drops without overcommitting take away both comeback windows and the crossing route.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like second and medium or second and long when defenses expect run out of Pistol personnel, since the play fake plays best against linebackers sitting on run keys.
Check the deep safety alignment before the snap. If you see two high safeties sitting deep, expect Cover 4 or Cover 2 and lean on the comeback routes since the cushion will be there off the play fake.
If the defense shows single high safety pre snap, be ready to test the deep crosser late in your progression because the safety often bites on the run fake, opening the middle of the field behind the linebackers.
Hot route the backside comeback into a hitch or out if you are facing aggressive corner press coverage, since the comeback needs space to break outside and a jammed release kills the timing.
Pair this play with HB Slam or HB Dive earlier in the series so the defense commits to stopping the run, then come back to PA Comebacks to punish linebackers and safeties who are keying run fits.
