Four Verticals out of Y Trips Pistol sends four receivers vertically to stretch the field, with the trips side featuring the slot receiver breaking into a corner route off the numbers while the outside trips receiver and backside single receiver run straight seams up the sideline. The HB checks down into a flat/angle route out of the backfield as the fifth option, giving the QB a built-in shallow answer if the verts are covered deep. This is a classic zone beater designed to expose Cover 2 (attacking the seams between the corners and safeties) and Cover 3 (overloading the deep third with four vertical stems), with the primary read progression going from the corner breaking route in the slot to the two seams, then working down to the HB check release if the coverage rotates over the top.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing, since two deep safeties sitting shallow (under 8 yards) signal Cover 2 or Cover 4 and tell you the seams will be tight but the corner route can work. Watch the slot corner or nickel defender at the snap, because if he sinks with the corner route instead of jumping it, that throwing window stays open longer. Key the middle linebacker's drop, since a fast MLB drop into the deep middle indicates Tampa 2 or a robber shell, which takes away the inside seam and forces you to the outside verts or the HB check. If the defense shows single-high with the corners playing outside leverage, expect Cover 3 or Cover 1, and prioritize the seams before the flat defenders can widen and the deep third defenders can convert. Look for user-controlled safeties cheating toward the trips side pre-snap, which signals a lurk or robber technique designed to jump the corner route, opening up the backside single-receiver seam instead.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two-high or one-high safeties, since Four Verts is most explosive against two-high shells that get stressed by four deep routes.
If you see Cover 2, target the seams between the corner and safety before the safety can rotate over, since the corner route from the slot will pull the flat defender and open a throwing lane.
Use motion or a hot route to convert one of the outside verts into a dig or option route if the corner shows press-man, turning this into a man beater against Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks.
Pair this call with Curls or Y Stick earlier in a series to bait linebackers into sitting shallow, then come back to Four Verts once the defense shows a tendency to play underneath zones softly.
Best called on second or third and long when you need explosive plays down the field, and avoid it in short yardage since it takes longer to develop than quick game concepts.
