Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Pistol Y Trips is a pure outside zone run play, with the offensive line flowing laterally to stretch the defense horizontally before the HB picks his lane. The diagram shows the running back taking a lateral path toward the play side edge behind zone-blocking linemen, with the three receivers to the trips side and the single receiver running vertical stems that hold their defenders rather than working as designed blockers. This is a zone run designed to attack cutback lanes if the edge defender crashes down, and the primary read progression is playside cutback lane, then bounce outside if the edge is sealed, then backside cutback if the front over-pursues.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker before the snap, since a wide alignment or crashing tendency opens the cutback lane immediately. Key the flow of the middle linebacker after the snap, if he overruns the play side gap chasing the stretch action, cut back through the vacated hole. Look for defenses in a 4-3 under or odd front with fast flowing linebackers, as this play punishes aggressive gap shooters and blitzers who abandon zone integrity. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra flow support in the box favors this run, while a stacked box with disciplined linebackers who stay square and read the zone action will shut it down. Beware of user controlled defenders spying the backfield or crashing the edge, since a smart user rush can blow up the stretch before the back reaches the line of scrimmage.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive front pre snap and identify if the defense is showing a heavy box, since HB Stretch loses value against 7 or 8 man fronts with stacked linebackers. Use the trips side alignment to bait safeties out of the box, then attack the vacated middle lane on the cutback. Motion the HB or use a pre-snap shift to see if linebackers flow hard with the zone action, which tells you whether the cutback will be there post snap. Pair this play with HB Slam or HB Dive earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect gap runs, then hit HB Stretch to punish overaggressive linebacker flow. Run this on early downs in normal down and distance situations where defenses are not selling out against the run, and avoid it in obvious short yardage where defenders sit tight in their gaps.
