PA Ctr Waggle is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Y Trips that sells a center run fake before the QB waggles to the right edge. The route concept features a deep corner route from the boundary trips receiver, an out breaking crosser sitting underneath along the flat, and a deep dig from the backside X releasing across the field, giving the quarterback a high low read on the rollout side plus a backside window. This is a play-action shot play designed to attack man coverage on the rollout while also giving zone beating answers with the underneath out and backside dig, and the primary read progression starts with the deep corner route, works down to the flat out, and comes back to the backside dig if the pocket holds.
Defensive Reads
Watch for cover 3 sky or cover 4 shells pre-snap, since the deep corner route needs a true one on one matchup to win against a true deep half or deep third defender. Key the flat defender and curl flat zone player after the snap, if he sinks with the crosser the out route window closes and you should progress to the dig or corner instead. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the boundary is the biggest tell that the corner route will win, especially against blitz heavy or aggressive man packages. Watch for edge pressure or contain defenders crashing the waggle side, since a disciplined edge rusher who stays home on the QB can blow up the rollout before routes develop. If the defense shows cover 2 or a hard flat corner sitting on the underneath out, that route is taken away and the backside dig becomes the higher percentage answer.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs like first or second and medium when defenses are still respecting the run fake off Pistol formation tendencies.
Check the safety shells pre-snap, if you see two high safeties rolling down late the corner route has single coverage and should be your first look on the rollout.
Roll the QB fully outside the tackle box to buy time and give the corner route and flat out time to develop, do not rush the throw before the fake sells.
Pair this with HB Slam or Strong Power earlier in a series to build run fake credibility, then hit PA Ctr Waggle when linebackers start crashing downhill on run keys.
If the corner route gets bracketed, work the throwback dig on the backside since defenders flowing hard with the waggle action often lose leverage on that crosser.
