Empty Chips Tight is the five-wide, no-back look inside Shotgun that condenses the formation instead of spreading it sideline to sideline. You get 11 personnel with the running back and tight end both flexed out as receivers, but the "Tight" tag pulls the splits in so the inside receivers align just outside the tackle box. That compression is the whole point: defenders have to declare their coverage leverage early, and the reduced splits create natural rub and mesh angles that regular Empty sets cannot generate because the bodies are too far apart to cross traffic.
The set differs from standard Shotgun spread and trips looks in two key ways. First, there is zero pass protection help behind the line, so the five-man line is your entire wall and every play is a true five-out concept. Second, the compressed alignment gives you leverage releases in both directions, which turns Mesh Spot and SFT Mesh Y-Corner into legitimate man-coverage destroyers while Dagger, Deep Post Out, and Post Cross attack the middle third against single-high zone shells. The SFT (shift) family adds pre-snap movement so you can rebalance strength after reading the defense's alignment.
Personnel-wise, this is where you isolate your best matchup. Flexing the running back out (3DRB and Power HB tags apply here) puts a back on a linebacker or safety in space, and the slot receiver tag lets you stack your SLWR inside where he gets a free release off the compressed split. Against man coverage, tag the widest receiver on Outs or Double 7 Stop and let him win one-on-one with no help defender nearby, since the defense has to commit bodies inside to handle the mesh and spot traffic.
Use this set on third down and in the two-minute drill where the defense has to defend the whole field. Against a two-high shell, go to Mesh Spot or Outs underneath. Against single-high, take your shot with Dagger or Deep Post Out down the middle seam.
Always identify the blitz pre-snap. Count the box: if you see six or more threatening rushers, hot route your flexed running back to a quick slant or drag and throw it before the rush arrives.
Run the SFT plays first in a series to diagnose coverage. If a defender chases the shifted receiver across the formation you are in man, so lean on Mesh Spot and SFT Mesh Y-Corner. If defenders stay put and pass off, switch to Dagger and Out X Dig.
Isolate your best matchup by putting your SLWR or a receiving back on the widest compressed split, then tag him with a hot route corner or out. With no help defender nearby, that is a one-on-one win every time against a linebacker.
Do not live in this set. Mix it into a series where you have already established the run out of a heavier Shotgun set, otherwise the defense dials up pressure knowing you have no back to block and no run threat.
