Breakdown
Double 7 Stop lines up out of Empty Chips Tight in Shotgun with five eligible receivers spread wide and no running back in the backfield. On both the left and right side, the outermost receiver runs a hitch route to the flat while the tight end and adjacent receiver stack a slant flat and out combo underneath, with the two innermost receivers on each side sprinting vertical before breaking outside on 7 (corner) routes toward the sideline. This is a quick pass concept built as a man beater and Cover 3 beater, using immediate separation from the hitch and slant flat combo underneath while the corner routes attack the deep outside quarters vacated by rotating zone defenders. The primary read progression starts with the quick hitch or slant flat to the boundary side pre-snap leverage, then works to the corner route if the cornerback bites on the underneath routes or if the QB identifies a Cover 3 rotation opening the sideline.
Defensive Reads
Watch cornerback depth at the snap, since soft corners bailing deep signal Cover 3 and open up the quick hitch and slant flat throws underneath. Key the flat defender or nickel linebacker drop, because if he sits on the slant flat combo the quarterback should immediately look to the corner route behind him. Identify safety rotation post-snap, as a single high safety shifting hard to one side leaves the opposite corner route isolated against a lone cornerback. Beware of Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties, since they can squeeze the corner routes and force checkdowns to the hitch routes only. Look for user-controlled defenders sitting in the shallow flat zone, which indicates the offense should attack vertically with the 7 route rather than the underdneath combo.
Usage Tips
Check the corner and safety alignment pre-snap to confirm Cover 3 or man coverage before snapping, since the corner routes are designed to exploit that exact rotation.
If the defense shows press man, prioritize the slant flat combo underneath for a quick, high-percentage completion before the corner route develops.
Use this play on second and short to medium distance situations where defenses are more willing to sit in zone shells, giving your corner routes room to work the sideline.
Pair Double 7 Stop with Outs or Post Cross from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath throws and deeper sideline shots.
Hot route the backside hitch into a fade or streak against teams that consistently jump the flat routes with linebackers or nickel corners.
