Flex Y Off Close is the compressed answer inside Shotgun's 11 personnel family. Instead of splitting receivers wide like Flex Wing or Flex Tight sets, this alignment tightens the formation with the Y tight end off the line and closed down next to the tackle, the slot receiver flexed just outside him, and the back offset in the gun. That condensed picture forces the defense to declare early: if they walk a safety down or bump into press, the outside grass is wide open on the single-side release, and if they stay in a two high shell, the compressed spacing lets your inside routes work the linebacker level before help can rotate.
The personnel group is what makes this set dangerous. One back, one tight end means the defense usually answers in base or a nickel look, which puts a linebacker or slower safety on the flexed Y and creates the mismatch you want. Because the tight end is aligned off the ball, he gets a free release into the flat, up the seam, or on the wheel without fighting a jam, and the tight split means the slot and Y are constantly crossing defenders' faces. TE Wheel, Mtn Rub Smash, and Mtn Fk Rub all weaponize that congestion by manufacturing legal traffic against man coverage, while Curl Ohio, Levels Mills, and Flood attack zone spacing with layered depth.
The run and RPO menu is what separates this from a pure passing set. Inside Zone and Counter Y give you legitimate gap and zone concepts with the Y as an extra body at the point of attack, and RPO Read Out plus RPO Zone Alert let you punish defenses that overcommit to stopping the run by immediately putting the ball in your best matchup. HB Slip Screen, HB Circle, and Hitch HB Rail keep the back involved as a receiver, which is why the 3DRB tag matters here, and PA Post Shot plus Escape give you the deep shot and rollout answers when the defense starts jumping your short game.
Read the shell pre snap. Single high with a walked down safety means take your shot with PA Post Shot or hot route the flexed slot on a corner into the vacated deep third. Two high with soft coverage means work Curl Ohio or Levels Mills underneath.
On third and medium, lean on Mtn Rub Smash and Mtn Fk Rub against man and Flood against zone, then check the back on Hitch HB Rail if the linebacker level squeezes your rubs.
Motion the flexed slot across the formation to identify man versus zone, then snap it and either take the rub concept or attack the vacated side depending on how the defender travels.
Use Inside Zone and Counter Y on early downs to bait the box, then run RPO Read Out and RPO Zone Alert from the same look so the defense cannot tell run from pass until after the snap.
When you see edge pressure or a user rushing off the tackle, go straight to HB Slip Screen or HB Circle, and hot route the tight end to a flat or drag as your safety valve against interior blitz.
