Mtn Rub Smash is a Cover 2 beater out of Shotgun Flex Y Off Close that pairs a classic smash concept on the boundary with a rub route on the backside. To the closed side, the outside receiver runs a corner route stacking vertically then breaking to the sideline while the inside X sits down on a quick hitch underneath, creating the traditional high low stretch on a hard corner or Cover 2 flat defender. Backside, the two receivers work a rub combo with the outside man clearing out on a deep in cut while the inside man rubs off him running an out and up, and the running back releases on a flat route to the opposite sideline for a checkdown or RPO style outlet. The primary read starts with the corner route on the smash side, working down to the flat defender, then progressing backside to the rub combo if the safety jumps the corner.

Defensive Reads

Watch the pre-snap alignment of both safeties, if they are split deep and level it strongly suggests Cover 2 which is exactly what the smash concept is designed to attack. Key the flat or corner defender on the smash side after the snap, if he sinks under the corner route the hitch is open, if he jumps the hitch the corner route has room behind him. On the backside, watch the leverage of the corner and safety on the rub combo, tight man coverage or aggressive Cover 1 will get picked by the natural rub action created by the two crossing releases. Against Cover 3, look for the deep third defender flowing to the corner route side, which can open a throwing lane to the backside out and up route working against a rotated corner. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or quarters shells with strong safety help over the top of the corner route, and against a well timed nano blitz that collapses the pocket before the smash concept fully develops.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties, since this play is built to exploit Cover 2 by putting the flat defender in conflict on the smash side. If you see man coverage instead, look immediately to the backside rub concept since the natural pick action creates separation against man beaters like Cover 1 or Cover 3 man matchups. Hot route the running back into a pure checkdown against zone blitz looks if you need an outlet with the flat route already built in. Use this play on second and medium to third and short situations where the corner route smash concept punishes a defense trying to stay conservative underneath. Sequence this with Mtn Fk Rub or Mtn Counter Y from the same set so the defense has to respect both the rub action and the run action out of identical formation and motion, keeping linebackers and corners guessing.
