Breakdown

Levels Mills out of Shotgun Flex Y Off Close (11 personnel) is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 4 beater built around vertical stacked reads. The two receivers to the trips side run the Levels concept: the inside man breaks in on a square in while the outside man climbs to a deep dig at the same landmark, stacking the underneath and intermediate windows against zone drops. The backside X runs a deep Mills post to attack the middle of the field and hold the safety, while the HB releases out of the backfield on a checkdown flare for a built-in outlet against pressure. Primary progression is Levels first (in to dig), then work back to the Mills post if the safety bites underneath, with the HB flare as the last resort against the blitz.

Defensive Reads

Watch the backside safety depth pre-snap, if he is shaded to the trips side or shows two high, the Mills post has room to work behind him once the dig clears the middle. Key the flat defender and the underneath linebacker on the trips side, this play is designed to put them in a horizontal stretch between the in route and the dig. If the defense shows Cover 3 or a single high rotation, the post can get squeezed by the deep middle defender, so lean on the levels side instead of forcing the Mills throw. User lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate middle zone can jump the dig route, so track any manually controlled linebacker or safety drifting toward that landmark before pulling the trigger. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest vulnerability, since both the post and the dig can separate vertically against trailing defenders, but a disguised blitz can beat this play before routes develop, so respect delayed pressure off the edge.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since the Mills post only opens up if you can move the backside safety with the dig route before the post crosses his face.

Against Cover 2, read the flat defender first: if he sits on the underneath in route, throw the dig behind him for a chunk gain over the middle.

Use the HB flare as your answer to disguised blitzes or when the interior line gets beat quickly, it is a safe checkdown that still moves the sticks on early downs.

Pair this play with RPO Zone Alert or RPO Read Out in the same set to keep the defense honest on run fits before hitting them with the levels concept later in the series.

Best called on 2nd or 3rd and medium when you expect zone coverage, since the stacked in and dig routes are designed to sit in the soft spots of a zone drop rather than separate from man coverage.
