HB Circle is a quick-pass man beater out of Shotgun Flex Y Off Close with 11 personnel. The play name references the halfback's circle route out of the backfield, which is your primary read against man coverage since it forces a linebacker to chase across traffic. The outside receiver runs a deep go to stretch the cornerback vertically, the slot runs a curl to sit in the underneath zone, the TE from the closed side works a quick out breaking to the flat, and the backside receiver runs a short slant into the flat area near the line. Blocking is minimal since this is a quick-game concept designed to get the ball out fast off the shotgun snap, with the HB releasing directly into his route rather than blocking.
Defensive Reads
Key the middle linebacker at the snap, since his drop or blitz angle tells you whether the HB circle route will be a clean look or contested. Watch for man coverage indicators like a linebacker mirroring the HB pre-snap, which signals this play is scheme-designed to win. Against zone coverage, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4, expect underneath defenders to sit and rob the curl and slant flat routes, so the HB circle becomes less of a sure thing and the go route on the outside becomes the better shot play. Look for a user-controlled defender spying the backfield or lurking in the shallow middle, since that indicates the defense is baiting the HB circle route as a trap. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge open up the flat and out routes faster than the defense can rotate, so check pre-snap for overloaded fronts and get the ball out quickly to the flat or curl.

Use HB Circle on early downs or third and short when you expect man coverage, since the HB out of the backfield creates a natural pick situation against man defenders trying to trail him. Pre-snap, check for a linebacker shaded over the backfield or a safety creeping down, since that tips man coverage and confirms the HB circle route will be open. Hot route the backside slant flat receiver to a quick out if you see a corner sitting low in a zone shell, since the slant flat can get clogged by underneath zone defenders. Pair this play with Curl Ohio or Flood from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and deeper shots, since both share similar formation looks but attack different levels.
