Defensive Reads

Watch for safety rotation before the snap, a single high safety shell typically means the defense is prepared to fill run gaps aggressively, while two high safeties can signal lighter boxes that favor this run. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles, if they are getting immediate penetration and blowing up the double teams, this play will get stuffed at the line and you should switch to outside runs or misdirection. User-controlled defenders flying downhill to fill the frontside gap are your cue to cut the RB back to the backside cutback lane immediately. This play struggles against gap-heavy fronts and 46 style overloaded blitz packages, since extra defenders crashing the interior gaps outnumber the zone blocking scheme's double teams.
Usage Tips
Run this play against base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts where the defensive line is not stacked heavy inside, since the zone blocking scheme thrives when there are clear double team opportunities on the interior.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter run or play-action shot instead of forcing this into a bad matchup.
Use manual RB control to press the frontside hole first, this forces linebackers to commit downhill before you plant and cut back against the grain for a bigger gain.
Pair this with RPO Read Out or RPO Zone Alert in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on run every time you show this personnel and formation, keeping second level defenders honest.
