Breakdown
Escape is a play-action flood concept out of Shotgun Flex Y Off Close that overloads one side of the field with three levels of routes. The backside receiver runs a deep corner while the two closest receivers to the play side run a seam and a flat route, and the outside receiver on the play side pushes a deep out that sits behind the flat, creating a high-low-flood read against Cover 3 and Cover 2 shells. The play-action fake holds linebackers for a beat, and the primary read progression works from the corner route to the deep out, then down to the flat as the checkdown against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat defender post-snap, if he sinks with the deep out route the flat is wide open for an easy checkdown. Key the deep safety rotation, a Cover 3 shell rolling to the flood side lets the corner route sit in the open window behind the corner and in front of the safety. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the seam route splitting the linebacker and safety, especially against Cover 1 with a blitzing linebacker. Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting in the flat or jumping the out route, a lurking user defender there is the biggest threat to this concept and should send you to the corner or seam instead. Cover 2 with hard-flatting cornerbacks opens the corner route over the top, but a disciplined deep half safety who stays square can close that window fast, so check the seam as your secondary answer.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into biting on the play-action fake before the flood routes develop.
Identify single high safety looks before the snap since Escape is built to attack Cover 3 with the corner route sitting behind the cornerback and in front of the safety.
Hot route the backside corner into a deep post if you see two deep safeties rotating hard to the flood side, giving you a one-on-one shot across the middle.
Pair this play with RPO Read Out or Inside Zone earlier in a series so the play-action fake carries more weight once linebackers start keying run.
Best called on second and medium or third and long when you need a defined flood concept that has answers at three depths against both man and zone coverage.
