Breakdown

PA Post Shot is a play-action shot play out of Flex Y Off Close in 11 personnel designed to hit a deep post over the top of the defense. Off the play fake, the outside receiver runs a deep post that crosses the field, the inner receiver breaks off a deep in/dig underneath the post, and the third receiver runs a corner or flag route to clear space to the outside while a tight end or back releases up the seam. The primary read is the deep post first, working from outside in to the crossing route underneath if the post is capped, with the seam and corner as late progression checkdowns against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Read the middle of the field pre snap, a single high safety is the green light to fire the post since there is no help over the top. Watch the play side linebacker depth after the snap, if he sinks quickly into the passing lane on the crossing route you need to speed up your post throw before the window closes. Identify Cover 3 sky or buzz variations, the rotating safety to the flat can jump the corner route so keep an eye on user defenders flying underneath. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, the deep post will be squeezed by two safeties over the top, use the crossing route underneath as your primary answer instead. Watch for user blitzers off the edge on the play fake, the play action rollout blocking is not built to hold up long against a delayed pressure package so get the ball out on time.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and short or after establishing the run game so linebackers bite on the play fake and open passing lanes underneath the post.

Check safety alignment before the snap, single high safeties struggle to cover the post and the crossing route at the same time so this is a strong shot play against Cover 3 and Cover 1.

If you see two high safeties pre snap, be ready to check down to the seam or corner route quickly since the post window will be tighter against Cover 2 or Cover 4.

Pair this play with Inside Zone or HB Circle earlier in a series to sell the run fake and increase the chance linebackers step up on the play action.

Hot route the corner route into a deep out if you are facing aggressive flat zone defenders jumping short throws, this keeps the picture clean for the post read.
