Trey Open Offset is the trips-style variant of Shotgun that stacks three receivers to one side while leaving a single isolated X receiver on the backside, with the halfback offset next to the quarterback rather than directly behind him. The "Open" tag means the tight end is detached and aligned in the trey structure (typically as the middle man in the three-man surface), so you are not dealing with an inline blocker. That changes everything about how the front reacts: defenses cannot set strength to a tight end body, they have to set it to a pure receiver surface, which forces safeties to rotate and often bumps a linebacker out into apex coverage he cannot win.
The personnel is 11 (1 RB 1 TE), which is the most versatile grouping in the game because it keeps base and nickel defenses honest. Where other Shotgun sets like Y Off or Tight Flex give you condensed formations and inline run support, Trey Open Offset spreads the field horizontally and pre-declares a strong side. The three-man surface generates natural traffic concepts (Mesh, Mesh Wheel, Levels Switch, Mtn Inside Cross, Slot Drive, Drive Under) that break man coverage with rub action you barely have to manufacture. Meanwhile the backside X is genuinely isolated, so against any single-high or Cover 3 shell you get a one-on-one with no help, which is where Y Corner KO, Redzone Post Fade, Stick N Nod, and a simple backside hot route fade become money.
The offset back is the other half of the equation. Because he is beside the quarterback instead of behind him, he releases cleanly to either side and gives you immediate screen and check release answers: HB Slip Screen, Mtn HB Swing, WR Mid Screen, and the RPO family (RPO Peek Slant, RPO Zone Peek). The run game stays legitimate out of the spread look with Inside Zone, Counter, 5 6 Trap, HB Off Tackle, HB Draw, and Read Option, all of which benefit from the defense being forced to cover three receivers to one side. That combination of horizontal stress, isolated backside, and functional gap and zone runs makes this one of the most complete sets in any playbook.
Read the safeties first: single high means go to the isolated backside X (Y Corner KO, Stick N Nod, Redzone Post Fade), two high means attack the trips side with Levels Switch, Slot Drive, or Mtn Spot Y Corner
On third and medium, Y Stick and Air Raid Stick give you a sit route against zone and a flat release against man, and you can hot route the number three receiver to a drag for a built in man beater
Use Mesh and Mesh Wheel when you see a user in the middle of the field: the double crossers occupy him and the wheel behind it becomes a chunk play against any man defender who gets rubbed
Block the offset back or hot route him to a swing before the snap if you have identified a nano or A gap pressure look, and keep HB Slip Screen in the rotation to punish repeated blitzing
Keep the run game live from this set with Inside Zone, Counter, and RPO Zone Peek when the defense goes light nickel or dime, and use HB Draw against obvious pass rush looks on second and long
In the red zone, lean on Redzone Up, Redzone Under, RZ Short Posts, and Redzone Post Fade, since the compressed field turns the trips surface into a pick heavy nightmare for man coverage
