HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Trey Open Offset is a classic screen play designed to bait aggressive pass rushers and blitz-happy defenses. The offensive line shows a delayed pass set before releasing to wall off defenders in front of the HB, who slips out of the backfield to the left while three receivers on the right run a clear-out combo (corner, dig, and flat) to pull coverage away from the screen side. The primary read is the HB out of the backfield immediately, with the linemen forming a lead wall in front of him as he works to the boundary.
Defensive Reads
Key the defensive line and edge rushers immediately after the snap, if they are crashing hard upfield without containing the screen, that is your green light to trust the wall developing on the left. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the backfield or sitting in a lurk zone near the line of scrimmage, since a disciplined spy can blow this play up before it develops. Check safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are rotated deep in a two-high shell, the underneath defenders have to respect the screen less and can close faster. Identify if the defense is in a zone blitz package with delayed rushers dropping into short zones, this is the biggest counter to HB Slip Screen since it eliminates the blocking angles up front. Look for linebackers reading the initial pass set of the O-line, disciplined backers who stay home instead of rushing will erase the play design entirely.
Usage Tips
Call this against defenses showing heavy pressure looks or Cover 0 and Cover 1 man blitzes since the screen naturally punishes overaggressive rushers. Snap it on early downs or after you have shown the same personnel running Inside Zone or HB Draw so the defense respects the run fake and bites on the play fake. Watch the linebacker depth pre-snap, if the backers are crashing downhill on run reads, this play will hit big. Pair this with Four Verticals or PA Read from the same set to keep defenses honest and prevent them from sitting on the screen tendency. Avoid calling this on 3rd and long against zone-heavy defenses since the extended blocking setup time can get blown up before the wall forms.
