Triple Slant out of Shotgun Trey Open Offset floods the field with three quick slant routes stacked from the trey side while the backside receiver runs a hitch or quick out for a built in outlet. This is a man beater designed to attack off man coverage and press man with immediate separation, though it also punishes zone defenses that sit their linebackers too deep since the underneath slants settle into the soft spots between hook zones. The HB stays in or releases on a check release to give you a fourth option if the pocket collapses. Primary read progression starts with the inside slant working to the flat defender, then works outside to the second slant, and finally to the third slant on the numbers if the defense rotates hard to the trips side.

Defensive Reads

Read the strong safety pre-snap, if he cheats toward the trey side before the snap, expect zone coverage help over the top and prioritize the quickest slant read. Watch for a nano blitz disguised behind the trey formation, if the defense shows six or seven in the box with linebackers crashing downhill, get the ball out on the first slant before the pocket collapses. Post-snap, track the flat defender's drop angle, if he sinks too deep chasing the outside slant, the window opens underneath for the first two slants. This play struggles against Cover 3 with a hard sink from the middle linebacker, since he can rob the shallow crossing window and undercut all three slant routes. Watch for user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone, if the human user sits at the second level and mirrors your first read, work the ball to the third slant or check down to the HB.

Usage Tips

Fire this play on third and short to third and medium when you expect man coverage since the rub action from the trey side slants creates natural picks against man defenders trailing in coverage.

Check the cornerback depth pre-snap, if you see press man alignment on the trips side, hot route the inside slant to a speed out to avoid the jam and get an instant win.

Against zone shells, key the flat defender first, if he sits on the shortest slant, throw off him immediately to the middle slant sitting in the void behind him.

Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the quick slant window and the run action, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.

Use this on early downs against nickel or dime packages when you expect soft zone drops from safeties playing two high, since the three-way slant stack overloads a single underneath zone defender.
