Breakdown

Mtn Spot Y Corner runs out of Shotgun Trey Open Offset with pre-snap motion from the backfield to the boundary, creating a bunch-style look before the snap. On the snap the trips side runs a Spot concept with the outside receiver stemming vertical then breaking out, the middle man running a corner route, and the inside man sitting down in the flat, while the backside single receiver runs a deep corner route up the boundary. This is a Cover 3 beater built around the Spot concept flooding one side with three levels (flat, corner, vertical) while the backside corner route attacks a rotated safety, and the primary read progression starts with the flat defender to determine the corner window before working backside if the coverage rotates away from the trips side.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment over the trips side since a single high safety shading toward motion suggests Cover 3 rotation that this play is designed to exploit. Watch the cornerback aligned over the backside single receiver, if he shows outside leverage with no safety help over the top he is vulnerable to the deep corner route. Post-snap, key the flat defender first since if he sinks with the corner route the underneath flat throw is open immediately for a quick completion. Identify any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, as he can undercut the corner route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. This concept struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 2 with two deep safeties since both corner routes run into help, so be ready to check down to the flat route or move to a different play if the defense shows two-high before the snap.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.

If the cornerback on the trips side bails deep at the snap that is a strong Cover 3 or Cover 4 indicator, so work the flat route first then attack the corner route window behind him.

Hot route the shallow flat man into a quick out if you diagnose a hard blitz, since this gives the quarterback a fast answer against extra pressure.

Pair this play with Mtn Z Spot or Mtn Inside Cross earlier in a series so the defense sees similar formation and motion but has to respect different route combinations, opening up the corner route later in the game.

Best used on second or third and medium since the Spot concept naturally clears underneath zones while the corner routes stretch vertically for a chunk gain.
