Y Stick out of Shotgun Trey Open Offset lines up with the trips side running the classic stick combination: the outside receiver runs a quick out, the middle receiver sits down on the stick route, and the inner slot receiver runs a flat route underneath, while the backside single receiver takes a shallow drag across the field. The lone running back stays in to check release and provide a safety valve up the middle. This is a rhythm based, high percentage man and zone beater built on horizontal stretch, with the primary read progression going stick to flat to backside drag depending on how the defense reacts to the trips concept.
Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop signals zone and a tight man alignment on the stick receiver signals man coverage. Watch for Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells that leave the flat exposed, since the stick and flat combo stresses the underneath zone defenders horizontally. Beware of Cover 2 sink or a user controlled linebacker sitting the stick route, since this can bait an interception if you force the throw without checking the flat first. Key on blitz packages that bring five or six defenders, since the quick stick throw beats most blitz timing if you get the ball out fast to the underneath routes. Watch the backside cornerback on the single receiver drag, since man coverage without safety help there can be exploited if the defense overcommits to the trips side.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the second level defenders to identify if you are facing man or zone before the snap, since Y Stick reacts differently to each shell.
Against zone, target the stick route sitting in the hole between the underneath defenders and throw with anticipation before the linebacker can close the window.
Against man coverage, especially off man or press bump techniques, look to the flat route first since it clears out quickly against tight man leverage.
Use this play on early downs to stay ahead of the chains, then pair it with Four Verticals or Y Corner from the same formation to punish safeties who start cheating up on the stick and flat combo.
If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, hot route the running back to a quick release into the flat as an emergency check down against pressure.
