Mtn HB Swing is a quick-hitting screen concept out of Shotgun Trey Open Offset with 11 personnel. The diagram shows the HB releasing out of the backfield and swinging wide to the flat while the offensive line sets up a screen wall in front of him, and the play design gets the ball out fast into space against pressure or overpursuing fronts. This is a zone beater and blitz beater built to punish teams that bring extra rushers or sink linebackers too deep into their zone drops, with the HB swing route as the clear and only primary read.
Defensive Reads
Watch for user-controlled linebackers spying the backfield or sitting flat footed in the flat, since they can jump the swing route and blow up the timing. Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone shells with deep-dropping linebackers are the ideal defense to attack, as the flat opens up wide for the HB. If the defense shows man coverage with a linebacker matched tight on the HB out of the backfield, this play loses value since the swing has no room to develop. Blitz-heavy fronts that send extra rushers and leave the flat vacated are exactly what this concept is designed to exploit, so identify blitz packages before the snap. Beware of defenders trained to jump screens or nano blitz packages that key the backfield motion, since a disciplined defender who reads the swing early can blow up the play in the backfield.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or after you have shown a few dropback passes to set up the screen look and freeze the defense.
Check pre-snap for blitz indicators like walked-up linebackers or safeties creeping toward the line, since this play is designed to punish aggressive pressure.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz package, snap it immediately and trust the screen wall to develop rather than looking off the HB.
Pair this with Mtn Four Verticals or PA Read earlier in a drive so the defense respects the deep pass and bites on run or blitz fakes, opening up the swing lane.
Use this on obvious passing downs against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells where linebackers drop deep into zones and leave the flat uncontested.
