Mtn Inside Cross comes out of Shotgun Trey Open Offset with a pre-snap motion piece from the backfield to the flat, giving you a built-in horizontal stretch on the underneath level. The three receivers to the trips side run a deep crossing route that cuts under the far post, a corner route breaking outside off the top of the stem, and an in cut that settles in the intermediate middle of the field, while the backside receiver runs a vertical seam up the numbers. This is a man beater at its core, using the crosser and in route to create natural rub traffic against man defenders, though the flood concept to the boundary side also stresses zone drops. Primary read starts with the deep crossing route working across the field, then progresses to the corner route if the crosser is taken away, with the flat route as the checkdown against a hard blitz.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the strong safety depth over the trips side, if he is sitting shallow he can jump the in route or undercut the crosser before it develops. Watch for a linebacker spy or a defender shaded to the motion man, that indicates man coverage and tells you the crosser and corner routes are your primary win conditions. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks deep into the crosser's path this play gets shut down and you need to reset to the corner or the flat. This concept struggles against a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow crosser lane, since that user-controlled defender can jump the throw before it clears traffic. Cover 3 with a hard buzz to the flat neutralizes the flood side, so if you see the corner sink into the flat pre-throw, look immediately to the backside vertical seam instead.

Usage Tips

Motion the backfield player pre-snap to identify man versus zone before the ball is even snapped, if the defender follows across the formation you have a man coverage tell.

Attack single high shells by working the deep crosser immediately since it has room to run away from the middle linebacker and away from the deep half safety.

Use the corner route as your answer against Cover 2 or Cover 4 looks where the crosser gets picked up by a flowing linebacker or zone defender sitting in the hook.

Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant or Read Option on early downs to keep the defense honest on run fits, then come back to Mtn Inside Cross when you see the linebackers cheating up.

Best called on second and medium or third and long situations where the deep crosser has time to develop and the flat route gives you a built-in checkdown against exotic pressure.
