Breakdown

HB Off Tackle from Shotgun Trey Open Offset is a run play that sends the halfback toward the play side tackle behind a down block and lead blocking scheme designed to seal the edge defender. The trey open receiver alignment pulls extra defenders away from the box, creating a numbers advantage for the offensive line to work combo blocks at the point of attack. Primary read progression starts with the play side end and OLB leverage, then bounces outside if the alley opens or stays tight to the B gap if the edge is sealed.

Defensive Reads

Read the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage before the snap. If both are crashing hard inside, this run has a natural bounce lane to the edge that the fullback or lead blocker can wall off. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap. Off Tackle out of Shotgun Trey Open Offset gets stopped by fast-flowing linebackers who fill the B gap quickly, so look for defenses that show light box counts or slow second level triggers. Check the strong safety alignment pre-snap. If he is rolled down into the box (8 man front look), the off tackle lane gets clogged and you should expect a stacked run fit that beats this play. Identify blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge from the trey side (the 3 receiver bunch look). Edge pressure from that side can beat the blocking scheme before the hole develops, so this play is more vulnerable versus aggressive 3-4 exotic blitzes. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support (single high safety, corners playing tight man) is where this play hits hardest because the second level defenders are occupied and the box stays lighter.

Usage Tips

Call this play on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you want to establish the run and set up play-action shots like PA Read later in the drive from the same formation.

Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense shows six or fewer in the box because of the trey open receiver alignment, this is your green light to run it as designed without hot routing anything.

Pair HB Off Tackle with RPO Peek Slant and RPO Zone Peek in the same set so the defense has to respect both the run fit and the quick game, which slows down linebacker run blitzes.

If the defense is stacking the box or showing an aggressive edge blitz, motion or check into HB Draw or Inside Zone from the same personnel to keep run fits honest without changing personnel.

Use manual control on your lead blocker to seal the edge defender if the CPU AI blocker is losing reps, especially against speed rushers off the trey side.
