This is a run play with no route concepts to read, so the primary read is the HB's aiming point, and he must press the hole and react to whether the edge is sealed or if he needs to bounce outside based on flow from linebackers and the edge defender.

Defensive Reads

Watch the edge defender pre-snap, if he is crashing hard down the line the lead blocker should be able to kick him out cleanly for a big gain. Look at linebacker depth before the snap, stacked linebackers who are creeping up signal a run blitz that can beat this play if they fill the gap fast. This play struggles against gap exchange fronts and disciplined edge defenders who hold their ground instead of getting sealed by the blocker. It beats light boxes and defenses playing two high safety shells that pull an extra defender out of the run fit. Post snap, watch for a user linebacker flying downhill unblocked, that is the key indicator you need to cut the run back away from the play call design.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive front pre-snap and look for light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box before calling this play.

Use this against defenses that are shading light on the strong side or when linebackers are showing blitz depth that pulls them out of run fits.

Pair this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the quick passing game off similar formation looks.

On early downs this play is best used to set up Counter or Inside Zone later in the series once you have shown the off tackle look and gotten the linebackers flowing hard to one side.

If the defense stacks the box with extra defenders, motion the HB or check to HB Draw or a quick pass concept like Y Stick instead of forcing this run into a loaded front.
