Defensive Reads

Pre snap identify two high safeties with linebackers showing zone drop depth, this is the shell that Slot Drive is designed to punish thanks to the dig sitting in the honey hole. If you see man coverage indicators like a corner shaded outside with no help over the top, expect the crossing dig to win versus off man technique but be ready for a rat linebacker to sit in the crosser's lane. Watch the middle linebacker at the snap, if he blitzes or widens to the flat the underneath drive route will have a wide open throwing lane. Cover 3 with a deep middle robber can jump the dig route, so check the flat and running back check release as your alternate progression if you see a single high safety rotate late. Corner blitzes or nano pressure off the edge will collapse the pocket before the dig fully develops, so key the box count pre snap and be ready to check to a quick game play if you count six or more defenders in the box.

Usage Tips

Snap the ball against two high safety shells since this play is tagged as a Cover 4 beater and the dig route will sit down in the seam window between the safeties.

Read the deep dig first, if the linebacker sinks with the crosser you can hit the underneath drive route running away from traffic for an easy chain mover.

Use the running back check release as your answer versus a blitz look, since the drive concept takes time to develop and you need a hot outlet if the protection breaks down.

Pair this call with Four Verticals or Mtn Four Verticals earlier in the drive to bait safeties into staying deep, then come back to Slot Drive to attack the intermediate zones they vacate.

Best used on second and medium or third and short to medium since the drive route and underneath crosser give you a high floor conversion option even if the deep dig is not there.
