Breakdown
Dig Y Cross out of Shotgun Trey Open Offset lines up with three receivers to the boundary and a lone receiver into the formation on the backside. The three-receiver side runs a deep dig from the outside slot that sits at intermediate depth, a corner route from the inside receiver that clears vertically, and a flat route from the tight end that anchors the underneath level, while the backside receiver runs a deep crossing route (the Y Cross) all the way through the formation to the opposite hash. This is a man beater at its core, using the deep cross to create natural separation against man defenders while the dig and flat give you a quick answer against zone drops. The primary read progression starts with the Y Cross working across the field, then works back to the dig if the cross is taken away, with the flat as your checkdown against pressure.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker or nickel defender at the snap, if he sinks with the dig route immediately that signals zone coverage and you should look for the Y Cross working behind him. Man coverage is exposed when the defender covering the crosser gets rerouted by formation traffic, giving the deep cross a clean release across the field. Cover 3 with a single high safety struggles to defend the dig and corner combination on the trips side since the flat defender cannot cover both underneath and intermediate routes. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, this is the primary threat to the Y Cross since he can undercut the route as it crosses the formation. A hard blitz from the offset side forces a quick decision, if the protection breaks down look immediately to the flat route as the built in answer against pressure.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep the dig route will have room to work in the middle of the field once it clears the linebackers.
Against man coverage, prioritize the Y Cross immediately since the natural pick and rub from the formation traffic creates instant separation versus press or trail technique.
Use this play on second and medium to second and long when you have time to let the deep cross develop, it is not a quick game rhythm throw.
Pair Dig Y Cross with Y Cross Flood or Levels Switch in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both a deep crosser and a flood concept from the same personnel and formation look.
If the corner route bites the coverage over the top or draws a safety, come off it fast and hit the dig sitting underneath, that route is your zone beater against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells.
