Inside Shock out of Shotgun Trey Open Offset is a man beating route concept built around a shock route from the inside receiver that breaks hard to the middle of the field to create immediate separation against man coverage. The trips side works a combination of in and out breaking routes to stretch underneath zones horizontally while the backside receiver runs a route that occupies the deep half safety. The primary read starts with the inside shock route working over the middle, then progresses to the trips side combo if the middle is jumped by a linebacker or safety.
Pre snap, check linebacker depth at the second level since Inside Shock lives in that shallow to intermediate window, if linebackers are sitting deep in their drops this play loses its main advantage. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high Cover 3 leaves the shock route open in the seam while two high Cover 2 forces a quicker decision to the trips side combo. Post snap, watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the middle of the field lurking for the shock route, if you see him crash down early move to the trips side flat or out breaking route immediately. This play struggles against Cover 4 and Cover 6 shells where corners can sink and rob the intermediate shock route while safeties stay deep, look for those matchup rotations pre snap. Man blitz packages that send extra pressure off the edge can disrupt the shock route timing, if you see a nano blitz alignment be ready to get the ball out fast or check to a hot route escape.
Attack Cover 3 and Cover 1 with the shock route since it settles in the void behind underneath zone defenders and creates a natural pick against man defenders trailing from depth.
Use the trips bunch look pre snap to identify if the defense is showing man or zone based on how the corners align, tight press alignment usually signals man coverage which favors this play heavily.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see a single high safety cheating to the trips side, this keeps the field balanced and gives you a second answer versus rotation.
Pair this play with Y Stick or Triple Slant in your play calling sequence since both plays attack similar horizontal zone voids, this keeps the defense guessing between quick game and the intermediate shock concept.
Best used on second and medium or third and short since the shock route sits down quickly and gives the quarterback a rhythm throw without needing a deep progression.
