Levels Switch out of Shotgun Trey Open Offset is a classic Cover 2 beater built on a switch release from the trips side. The two receivers to the top of the diagram cross release, with one running a deep in from the numbers to the middle of the field and the other clearing underneath on a shallow drive back toward the ball, creating natural traffic for zone defenders. The backside X runs a deep comeback breaking back to the sideline while the RB releases out of the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline for a vertical answer if the levels concept is squeezed. Read the field high to low: start with the deep in route working from outside in, then work down to the shallow crosser, and finally check the wheel route as your explosive play if the safety bites on the levels action.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties, since that confirms the levels concept has a clean shot at the deep in route against Cover 2 or Cover 4. Post-snap, watch the flat defender or corner responsible for the shallow crosser, if he sinks too deep the shallow route is wide open for an easy completion and yards after catch. Use the switch release to manipulate zone defenders, if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, prioritize the wheel route out of the backfield for a big play down the sideline.

This play shines on second and medium to long distance where the levels concept can pick up a chunk of yards on the deep in route before defenders can rally.
