Off the snap the flanker breaks into a hard dig across the middle at intermediate depth while the trey side stacks a deep corner route over two shallow crossers heading to the opposite sideline, creating a natural clear out for the dig to settle into the vacated middle window. The backfield stays in to protect, making this a pure dropback dig concept built to attack zone conflict on the second level while the deep corner and crossers hold safeties and corners on the far side. Defensive Reads

Check the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow in a hook zone he can jump the dig route and turn it into a pick six opportunity. Watch the safety rotation post snap, a single high safety that stays home over the top signals man or Tampa 2, which opens the window for the dig to sit down in the honey hole. If the defense shows two deep safeties and sinks a linebacker into the deep middle, that Tampa 2 style drop can squeeze the dig and force you to hold the ball or check to the deep corner route on the trey side. User controlled defenders lurking in the shallow crossing routes can bait a quick throw, so scan for a user dropping into the shallow zone before committing to the dig read. This play is shut down hard by aggressive man blitzes that get a free rusher, since there is no built in outlet against six man pressure with everyone running vertical or intermediate breaking routes.

Usage Tips

Identify pre snap whether the defense is showing two high or single high, since the dig thrives against single high shells where the flanker can settle in the vacated middle hole. Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz or man coverage before the snap so you know whether to trust the dig or reset to the deep corner. Against zone drops, throw the dig with anticipation just before the receiver clears the underneath linebacker level so you beat the closing window instead of waiting for full separation. Pair this call with HB Slip Screen or RPO Peek Slant earlier in a series to slow down aggressive linebackers, then come back to FL Dig once they start biting on shorter routes. Best used on second and medium to second and long where the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells that the dig is designed to split.
