This is a play-action man beater at its core, since the deep cross exploits any man defender caught trailing or picking through traffic, but the layered shallow drag and out route also give you answers versus zone drops if the linebackers sink under the crosser. Progression starts with the deep cross, then works down to the shallow drag/comeback as the checkdown against underneath zone coverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and box count; a stacked box with safeties creeping down signals the defense is selling out on the run fake, which is exactly when this play hits hardest. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender flying down to sell run support, since that opens a throwing lane for the deep crossing route behind him. Cover 3 sink or Tampa 2 drops from linebackers will contest the shallow drag, so if you see linebackers sitting flat-footed reading the quarterback, be ready to climb your first read to the deep cross before they can re-route. Man coverage with no safety help over the top, especially Cover 0 or Cover 1 press, gets exposed by the deep cross beating a trailing defender across the field. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field on zone blitzes, since that defender can undercut the shallow drag route and bait a turnover if you rush the check-down read.

Usage Tips

Use PA Read on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short/medium) when you have already established the run game out of Trey Open Offset, since the play-action freeze is most effective when defenders respect the run fake.
