Slot Left is Shotgun's option run hub in 11 personnel, and the alignment is what separates it from Shotgun Wing Slot, Shotgun Split Slot, or the standard 2x2 sets. You get a slot receiver stacked inside the left outside receiver, the tight end attached to the right side, and the back offset in the gun. That gives you a two-receiver bunch look to the left with a single detached X to the right, so the defense has to declare strength before the snap. Any single-high or Cover 3 shell that rotates toward the slot side immediately leaves your isolated X receiver in one-on-one leverage, which is exactly what the X Dig concept and PA Comeback Seam are built to attack.
The play list leans heavily gadget and option. HB Dive, Inside Zone Split, Speed Option, Read Option, and Y Lead Read Opt Rt all read off the same shotgun mesh point, so you can run the entire zone read tree from one look without changing personnel. That is the value of 11 personnel here: the tight end is a real blocker on the read side, but he is also a legitimate seam threat, so defenses cannot commit an extra hat to the box without losing the middle of the field. HB Slip Screen punishes teams that start crashing the edge to kill your keeper reads.
Passing out of Slot Left is mostly play-action and isolation work. PA Comeback Seam and PA Mtn Slide hold linebackers with the run fake and then attack the intermediate levels, while X Dig is a clean man beater when you get a press look on the single side. The slot alignment also gives you a free release on the inside receiver against most zone shells, which makes hot routing him to a quick out, drag, or slot fade one of the most efficient adjustments in the set.
Read the safety count first. Single high means run your option plays and the X isolation concepts. Two high means hammer Inside Zone Split and HB Dive at the lighter box.
Use motion to flip the slot receiver across the formation to identify man versus zone. If the defender travels with him, X Dig and the slot fade hot route become your primary looks.
Establish Read Option and Inside Zone Split early so PA Comeback Seam and PA Mtn Slide have real teeth in the second half. Play-action only works after you have punished the box.
On third and medium, hot route the slot to a drag and pair it with the X Dig for a natural rub against man coverage. Against zone, sit the drag in the void between the flat and hook defenders.
Call HB Slip Screen when you see the same edge defender crashing hard on your option reads or when the opponent shows a heavy outside blitz look pre-snap.
