HB Dive out of Shotgun Slot Left is a downhill run play that sends the running back straight through the A-gap behind the center and guard immediately at the snap. The offensive line executes a straight-ahead blocking scheme with double team potential at the point of attack, prioritizing movement over the interior defensive line rather than reaching for zone cutback lanes. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element, designed to win with quick downhill decisiveness against light boxes rather than lateral misdirection.
Defensive Reads
Read the middle linebacker depth before the snap, since a linebacker sitting shallow at four yards or less can beat the RB to the hole and blow up the dive before it develops. Watch for a nose tackle or defensive tackle shaded directly over the center in an even front, since that alignment plugs the primary A-gap read immediately. This play struggles against Cover 1 or Cover 3 with a spy linebacker because that defender is free to key the mesh point and fill downhill without coverage responsibility. It beats light six-man boxes and defenses that show blitz but drop into zone coverage post-snap, since the second-level defenders are occupied with pass drops instead of run fits. If the defense shows a heavy inside blitz with both linebackers crashing the A-gaps pre-snap, expect the dive to get gang tackled for a loss unless the offensive line wins its double team quickly.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only trigger HB Dive when you count six or fewer defenders in the box, since this play lacks the cutback answers of an outside zone run. Use it against aggressive linebackers who are flowing hard to outside runs or read options in the set, since Dive punishes overpursuit with an immediate inside cutback lane. Pair this call with Speed Option and Read Option from the same formation to keep linebackers honest, since those plays look similar pre-snap but attack the perimeter. On early downs, hit Dive after showing Inside Zone Split a few times so the front is already flowing laterally and gets gashed by the quick hitting downhill path. Avoid calling this into stacked fronts with a linebacker sitting in the A-gap pre-snap, and audible to HB Slip Screen instead if you see blitz indicators like safeties creeping down.
