X Dig out of Shotgun Slot Left features a five man route concept designed to attack the middle of the field with a deep crossing route. The X receiver runs the namesake dig, breaking hard across the field at intermediate depth to sit down in the void between linebackers and safeties, while the outside receiver on the right side clears vertically on a go route to take the top off the coverage. The slot receiver runs a shallow drag underneath, the TE runs a corner route from the left, and the RB releases on a swing/wheel route to the flat for a checkdown or leak out option. This is a man beater concept: the dig creates natural separation against man leverage, and the crossing traffic from the shallow drag can pick off trailing defenders. Primary read progression starts with the X dig working from the backside, then works to the corner route from the TE, before checking down to the shallow drag or RB swing if the middle is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high safety looks like Cover 1 or Cover 3, since the dig route exploits the seam left open when the middle linebacker has to carry the crosser. Watch for two deep safety shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4, which can squeeze the dig route and force the quarterback to check down to the shallow drag or RB swing. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop; if he sits in a hook zone rather than carrying the dig, that indicates zone coverage and the window will close quickly. User controlled defenders sitting in the deep middle or lurking underneath the dig route can jump the route for a big play, so quarterbacks need to read the user before releasing the ball. Disguised blitzes from the slot or overload pressure off the edge can collapse the pocket before the dig fully develops, so recognizing blitz alignment pre-snap is critical to getting the ball out on time.
Usage Tips
Look for man coverage shells pre-snap, especially Cover 1 or Cover 3 man, since the dig route thrives against trailing defenders who cannot break on the ball in time.
Use motion across the formation before the snap to identify man versus zone; if the defender follows the motion man, you know it is man coverage and the dig should be your first read.
This play works best on second or third and medium situations where you need 6 to 10 yards, since the dig sits down at a depth that consistently moves the chains.
Hot route the RB to a stick or flat route if you anticipate a blitz, giving your quarterback a quick outlet against pressure looks.
Pair this play with Speed Option or Inside Zone Split from the same set to keep defenses honest on early downs, then dial up X Dig once the defense starts cheating toward the run.
