Breakdown
Inside Zone Split is a pure run play out of Shotgun Slot Left, and the diagram shows no route combos, just five linemen sliding in unison to one side with the running back's red path crossing behind the quarterback for a split zone hit. This is a zone run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, built to attack whichever gap the defensive front leaves soft. The primary read is a one cut decision for the running back: press the play side gap, and bend it back away from flow if the backside cutback lane opens as the line covers down and climbs to the second level.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked box with eight defenders near the line, that alignment kills inside zone before the snap and should trigger an audible. Identify if linebackers are keying the mesh point aggressively, fast flowing linebackers can be gashed on the cutback if the back presses correctly. Look for a nose tackle or three technique lined up head up on the play side guard, that alignment clogs the primary gap and forces the bounce read. Post snap, track whether the defensive line is getting vertical push or getting doubled and controlled, penetration disrupts the one cut timing immediately. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the A or B gap pre-snap, that is a sign the defense is sitting on inside zone and expecting the dive.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit.
If the defense shows a two high shell with linebackers sitting back, this is an easy call since it removes an extra run defender near the line.
Use your slide protection hot routes sparingly here, this play wants the offensive line working in rhythm rather than manually adjusted.
Pair this with Speed Option and Read Option from the same set so the defense has to respect both the dive action and the perimeter threat off similar splits.
Best used on early downs, first and second and short to medium, when you want to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play action shots later in the drive.
