Defensive Reads

Look for linebacker depth at the snap, if the play side linebacker flies downhill immediately it usually means a run blitz or gap exchange call designed to take away both options. Force defensive schemes and scrape exchange calls are the best answer to this play since they assign one defender to the dive and another to the QB, eliminating the natural advantage of the read. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box leaves this play vulnerable to explosive gains if the read is made correctly. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender crashing down from depth since a smart human opponent will often spy the QB manually rather than trusting CPU logic on the read.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs, 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, when you need to stay balanced and keep the defense honest before dialing up play-action shots later in the set. Pre-snap, check the box count and the depth of the play side defensive end, if he is crashing hard down the line every snap you can key on pulling the ball more often. Manually control the QB after the snap so you can override the CPU read logic and make the correct decision based on how the end plays it, this is critical in competitive play. Pair this with Speed Option and HB Dive from the same set to keep linebackers guessing between different mesh point run styles without changing formation. Set up PA Comeback Seam and PA Mtn Slide later in the series once the defense starts crashing hard on the read man, since your run action will hold the linebackers and open up the play-action passing lanes.
