Spread Flex is the widest, most horizontally stretched look in Shotgun, and that spacing is the whole point. You get 11 personnel with the back offset next to the quarterback, the tight end flexed out of the formation instead of attached to the tackle, and three receivers distributed across the field so the defense has to declare its coverage rotation before the snap. Compared to tighter Shotgun sets that keep the tight end inline for extra protection or gap run support, Spread Flex trades that blocking help for pre-snap clarity: with everyone split out, you can read leverage, safety depth, and press alignment cleanly on every snap.
The flexed tight end is the matchup lever. Against base personnel, that flex forces a linebacker or a slow safety to cover in space, and concepts like Y Corner, Y Cross Flood, Y Stick, and Y Shallow Cross all funnel the ball to that isolated body. If the defense answers with dime or nickel, your inside power run game (Outside Zone, RPO Read Screen) gets a numbers advantage instead. The SLWR tag matters here because the slot alignment gives you a receiver working from a two way go on every play, which is death against single high man coverage when you stack it with Mesh or Z Shallow Cross rubs.
Beyond the core dropback game, Spread Flex carries real gadget and screen depth. Jet Touch Pass punishes over pursuit and flow, HB Slip Screen cashes in on aggressive inside pressure, and the 3DRB tag means your third down back is on the field for check releases and screen leverage. PA Deep Outs and Slot Flags give you the vertical complements once the defense starts squatting on shallow crossers, and Four Verticals plus Smash Corners cover the deep field against both single high and two high shells. The 617 concept rounds out the set as a situational money play once you know what shell the defense favors.
Live in this set on third and medium, where Y Stick, Mesh, and Y Corner all give you a quick, high completion answer against both man and zone
Motion the slot receiver across the formation before the snap: if a defender travels, run your Mesh or Z Shallow Cross rub concepts, and if the shell stays static, go to Y Corner or Smash Corners
Block the back and use a slot drag hot route when you see two high with a blitz look, since that gives you a quick outlet while keeping protection intact
Use RPO Read Screen and HB Slip Screen as your counterpunch after an opponent commits to inside pressure, then follow with Four Verticals once the safeties start creeping down
Save 617 and Jet Touch Pass for high leverage downs after you have established the shallow cross and screen game, because both concepts depend on defenders overcommitting
Check Outside Zone when the defense goes dime and vacates the box, but do not force it against a user controlled defender waiting in the second level
