Y Corner out of Shotgun Spread Flex 11 personnel is a five man route concept built to attack the boundary and the seam with a clear progression. The backside receiver runs a deep dig across the field while the outside receiver on that side clears with a go route, and on the strong side the Y (TE) runs the namesake corner route breaking outside while the inside receiver runs a crossing out route underneath, with the RB releasing on a flat/wheel route out of the backfield. This is a man beater at its core, using the corner route to attack outside leverage and the underneath crosser to create natural rub separation, with the RB check down giving a built in answer against blitz pressure.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment, since Cover 1 and Cover 3 leave the Y corner route isolated against one defender with no deep help to the sideline. Key the cornerback over the TE at the snap, if he opens his hips to the corner route immediately it signals man coverage and the window will be tight but beatable with anticipation. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the intermediate zone near the crossing out route, this is the most common spot for a jumped throw and a pick six against aggressive user play. Check linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers signal blitz packages that leave the RB check down and the underneath crosser wide open in the void. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4, the corner route gets squeezed by the deep half safety, so shift focus to the dig route or the crossing out as the higher percentage read.
Usage Tips
Use this on second and long or third and medium when the defense shows single high safety looks, since the Y corner route has room to work against Cover 1 or Cover 3. Check the cornerback over the TE pre-snap, if he is playing tight man with no safety help over the top, the corner route wins immediately on the release. Hot route the RB to a wider flat release if you see linebackers sitting in short zones, this gives you a quick answer against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells that clog the corner route window. Pair this play with Y Stick or Mesh from the same set to keep the defense honest on quick game while setting up the corner shot later in the series. Against zone heavy defenses, look to the backside dig first since it settles into soft spots vacated by underneath defenders sinking to cover the corner route.
