Inside Zone out of Shotgun Spread Flex is a true zone blocking run play designed to hit between the tackles with the RB reading his blocking scheme rather than a fixed hole. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, creating movement and letting the running back press the line and cut into whichever crease opens based on how the defensive front flows. Your primary read progression is backside to frontside: identify if the backside defensive end or linebacker crashes down, and if so, bounce to the frontside cutback lane, otherwise take the natural A or B gap read straight downhill.
Watch the Mike linebacker depth and alignment before the snap, if he is stacked tight behind the defensive line at four yards or less he is likely keying the run fit immediately. Identify one gap versus two gap defensive tackles, one gap penetrating fronts disrupt zone blocking timing and can blow up the play before it develops. Look for a safety creeping down into the box pre-snap, that is a strong indicator of an eight man front or a run blitz package designed to outnumber your blockers. Post-snap, track whether the defensive line is getting vertical push or getting hooked, if linemen are moving laterally with the zone steps you have a running lane developing. This play struggles against gap control defenses that stay disciplined and do not overpursue, and it gets stuffed by user controlled defensive tackles who consistently win the point of attack and sit in the backfield.
Use pre-snap motion or a WR shift to bait linebackers into showing run blitz or spy tendencies before the snap so you know if the box is loaded.
Check defender count in the box before the snap, if there are six or more defenders stacked inside you should consider audibling to a perimeter run like Outside Zone or a quick game pass instead.
Pair this play with PA Read or RPO Read Screen in the same set so the defense has to respect both the downhill run action and the quick perimeter throw off similar formation and motion.
Against aggressive user linebackers who shoot gaps immediately, use the cutback lane since zone blocking naturally creates a backside crease when defenders overpursue.
Save this play for early down situations like first and ten or second and short where defenses are not yet in dime or heavy nickel packages that remove size from the box.
