Breakdown

Y Stick out of Shotgun Spread Flex lines up with four receivers spread wide and a single back in the backfield. The backside outside receiver runs a deep drive across the field, the backside slot pushes vertical then breaks outside on a corner route, the frontside slot sits down on the stick route, and the frontside outside receiver runs an out from the flat after releasing underneath. The running back releases out of the backfield to the flat opposite the stick, giving a five man route concept built to attack both man and zone coverage with a quick, high percentage progression starting at the stick route.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check for a single high safety since Cover 3 or Cover 1 leaves the stick route open against a linebacker who has to cover horizontal ground. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sits on the stick route immediately look to the corner route breaking behind him. Against man coverage, the running back's flat route gives an easy answer if a linebacker or blitzer is forced to cover him one on one. Cover 2 shells are the toughest matchup since the corner route runs into the deep half safety and the flat defender can squeeze the stick, so lean on the backside crosser or checkdown instead. Post-snap, identify blitz packages quickly since the stick route and running back flat route serve as built in blitz beaters that get the ball out before pressure arrives.

Usage Tips

Read the stick route first since it is the quickest developing throw and beats both zone and man coverage underneath.

Use the corner route to attack Cover 3 or Cover 4 if the flat defender jumps the stick, since it sits behind the underneath zone drop.

Hot route the backside deep crosser into a shorter drag against man coverage to speed up the timing and give yourself a checkdown against a blitz.

Pair this play with Four Verticals or PA Dig from the same set to keep defenders honest against the quick stick concept once they start jumping the underneath throws.

Best used on second and short or third and short since the stick and out routes convert quickly, but the corner route also gives you an explosive shot if the defense sells out on the quick game.
